If your health regimen includes walking instead of taking public transportation, then this map is for you. Created by healthcare website Treated.com in collaboration with GP Wayne Osborne, the map indicates how many calories an average person will burn by walking between any two Tube stations. The results are actually pretty disappointing. You have to go halfway across the city to burn off the equivalent of one little scone. By the time you work off a full English breakfast, you’ll be wading into the Channel.

The calorie estimates are based on the assumption that an average person will burn slightly less than four calories per minute while walking. Jogging or bicycling will burn calories faster, about 12 per minute and seven per minute respectively. For people who are really taking this seriously, Treated has even provided these handy charts of the longest and shortest legs in the Tube system.

If information like this were available for your city, would it motivate you to walk more? Or would the low calorie counts make you to stick to the trains and hit the gym in your spare time? You wouldn’t see as much of the city that way, but you also wouldn’t get your street clothes as sweaty. Urban life is all about compromises like that.
